THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The concluding function of the third International Congress on Kerala Studies saw the CPM making a loud call for a broad consensus on Kerala’s development.
The winding-up speech by CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday identified a lethargic bureaucracy, negative attitude of the Opposition towards development projects and a shortsighted media as reasons for the stalemate in Kerala’s development.
Pinarayi called for an introspection by all stake holders of development and demanded that there be a broad consensus on the issue of upholding the interests of the state.
‘’How long can we continue with this red-tapism? The progress achieved by our state hasn’t trickled down to the civil service. Can anyone who approaches a government
office for any deed return satisfactorily? It is high time we conducted a thorough introspection,’’ Pinarayi said taking a dig at the lethargic bureaucracy.
Pinarayi’s observation assumes significance as it comes close on the heels of the Pay Commission recommending huge hike to state government employees.
Criticising the Opposition for not viewing development projects in the right perspective, Pinarayi said its attitude opposing projects introduced by the ruling party must change.
Corporates upset over the loss of a tender also came in for criticism. ‘’It is quite natural that some companies lose out in the tendering proces of a project. Once the contract is awarded to a company, those who miss out try to sabotage the project,’’ said Pinarayi.
‘’If a study on the number of projects abandoned on flimsy grounds is conducted, the result will be stunning,’’ he said.
