MALAPPURAM: Citing moral reasons, Education Minster P K Abdu Rabb has announced the decision to give up his son's medical PG seat at the Thrissur Jubilee Mission Medical College. "It is not morally right to be a minister and to admit son to a college that has not allotted 50 per cent seats meant for government in medical PG admissions," he said at a press meet held at the League House on Friday.

Making clear that his son Dr. Nihas Naha has sought admission in management seat in Thrissur Jubilee Medical College for MD Pediatrics by paying Rs 16 lakh as the annual fee, the minister said that the decision was completely moralistic and personal.

"There was no compulsion from the UDF or the League, he said. According to the minister, his son has bagged 396th rank in the medical PG entrance and has applied for PG seat in Thrissur Jubilee Mission Medical College when they have invited online application. He was ranked 10th for counselling. Since four candidates above him didn't turn up, his position was at 6th rank for counselling and got Pediatrics branch which he opted for.

Denying the allegations that he had used the power of his office to influence the admission, he said that even if managements have allotted 50 per cent seats to the government, there would have been no change in his son's rank, since he has applied for management seat.

Alleging that it was a failure by the last government not to give the list of candidates for the 50 per cent of Medical PG seats under the self financing colleges, the minister said he or the management has not intervened in the admission process for securing a seat for his son.

Responding to a question on Youth League leader K M Shaji's demand to conduct probe into the issue, the minister said that if minister has done any wrong, CM has the power to inquire into it.
