THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Giving a rude shock to the CPM, its firebrand young leader Sindhu Joy quit the party in a huff on Thursday and joined the Congress. ‘’The CPM has not given me any serious responsibility after completion of my term as SFI state president three years ago. This at a time when even outsiders get decent accommodation, including Assembly tickets, in the party. I am fed up,’’ Sindhu Joy told reporters after handing over her resignation as CPM Thiruvananthapuram district committee member to district secretary Kadakampally Surendran. She also quit as SFI vice-president and the state committee membership of the DYFI.
In retaliation, the CPM expelled Sindhu Joy from the party. “Sindhu Joy has been expelled from the party for engaging in anti-party activities,’’ a statement by Kadakampally Surendran said.
Later, Sindhu Joy attended the election convention of Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy in Pampady and announced her desire to work for the Congress.
Sindhu, who rose as a promising young leader by organising students under the SFI during the self-financing college struggle, was the CPM candidate at Puthuppally against the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in 2006.
She had given a tough fight to Congress candidate K V Thomas in the Lok Sabha poll in 2009. After that, it was a love-hate relationship with the party.
