THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Businessmanturned filmmaker Sohan Roy, whose 3D film ‘Dam 999’ landed in controversy after it was banned in Tamil Nadu, distanced himself from the Mullaperiyar issue.
Saying that the controversy is unwarranted, Roy said that dam was just an element in the film and it has nothing to do with the Mullaperiyar issue between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Speaking at the ‘meet-thepress’ programme, organised by the Press Club here on Friday, he admitted that the controversy gave mileage for the film.
“Our team is camping in Tamil Nadu to convince them that it has nothing to do with the Mullaperiyar issue. We hope that the ban will be lifted in one week’s time. We were ready to approach the Supreme Court if there was a country-wide ban on the film.
Fortunately, it did not happen and the film hit the screens across the country on Friday,” he said.
Roy said that title of the film was not in the context of the Mullaperiyar agreement of 999 years between the two states. “The title, Dam 999, just signifies the date, September 9, 2009, when the dam collapses in the film. In fact, the movie gives the thrust to Navarasa’s and nine characters depict these,” he said.
In a bid to distance himself from the Mullaperiyar issue, which is in the national limelight, he maintained that the film was a product meant for the foreign crowd and had little for a Malayali film buff.
