THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Writer Perumbadavam Sreedharan has been appointed president of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

The state government has issued orders in this regard, according to a statement.

An author of note, Perumbadavam shot to instant fame with ‘Oru Sankeerthanam Pole,’ his 1993 novel based on the life of Fyodor Dostoevsky and his wife Anna. The novel broke all publishing records in Malayalam making its author a household name and winning him the prestigious 1996 Vayalar Award.

Exactly 10 years later, in 2006, he won the Malayattoor Award for his work ‘Narayanam.’ Born in 1938 at Perumbadavam in Muvattupuzha, young Sreedharan started his literary life as a poet. He soon switched to short stories and later, novels.

He has also authored scripts for 12 films in Malayalam. Perumbadavam, as he is popularly known, is a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.
