The work on Kanamala bridge, the crucial link of Erumely road with Elavunkal Junction on the Mannarakulanji-Chalakayam route for the Sabarimala pilgrims, is yet to begin for want of clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

Though the foundation-stone for the bridge was laid by then PWD Minister Mons Joseph three years ago, there is no positive sign of beginning the bridge work. The delay in the work on the  bridge has resulted in cost-overrun. The original estimate of Rs 3.45 crore has more than doubled to Rs 7.62 crore now, PWD sources said. Though the PWD paid Rs 6.21 lakh as land value and Rs 12 lakh for the cost of trees to the Forest Department a year ago as part of the compensation package, clearance from the Union Forest Ministry is yet to come.

With six months remaining for  the new pilgrimage season to begin, the completion of the  bridge is crucial in view of the traffic bottlenecks on it.

On completion of the bridge, acquisition of 30 cents of land on the Kanamala side is needed for the smooth passage of thousands of pilgrim vehicles during the peak season days of December-end and  January. Otherwise, the narrow width on the Kanamala side of the road may choke the traffic and heighten the chances of accidents, PWD sources said.
