The accident involving the jeep which was carrying a police team investigating a sex scam involving a minor who was forced into flesh trade by her mother, has proved costly for the police as the mishap has uncovered the secret probe into the matter, helping the accused to go underground.

The accident which occurred at Adimali the other day had drawn the media attention leading to the uncovering of the probe, helping most of the accused to escape, a top police official told Express.

The mishap occurred at a time when the probe team was about to zero in on all the accused. The vehicle had one of the accused in it, the official said.

Things have become difficult for the police team as the accused are aware of the latest developments of the investigation, he said.

The police had strong evidence against all the seven accused, of which three, including the mother of the girl Lissy, 43, have been arrested. They have been remanded in custody.

The official said that all those involved in the case were common people hailing from the district.

Terming that the reports of involvement of VIPs in the case as baseless, the official said that the police were probing on the basis of the information provided by the girl.

The police will intensify investigation in the coming days. It is not known if the accused are still in the state or have escaped to other states. Though the girl’s mother is directly involved in the case, her father, a labourer, has nothing to do with it, the official said.

The police had conducted probe in various places such as Thodupuzha, Perumbavoor and Kodanad. The girl, a Plus-I student, was forced into  flesh trade by her mother from 2010 to 2012.

The other arrested  are Sreekumar, 33 of Rajakkad and Thayyil Joseph, 45, of Upputhodu.
