The police have arrested K A Rauf in connection with a case of attempting to trap Malappuram DySP Abhilash in a bribery case.

Rauf surrendered at the office of the Inspector of Police here on Tuesday after getting anticipatory bail from the Vigilance Court in Thrissur. Investigative officer Perinthalmanna DySP K P Vijayakumaran registered the arrest.

Another accused in the case, Aboobacker Siddiq, has already been arrested.

Earlier, the police had got a tip-off that someone was trying to trap the Malappuram DySP who was investigating a blackmailing case against Rauf.

According to the police, Rauf gave the money to Aboobacker Siddiq which was to be given to the DySP as bribe. The plan was to trap the DySP in a Vigilance case.

“We interrogated K A Rauf for one hour on Tuesday and the investigation is continuing. The court has directed Rauf to present himself in front of the investigative officer whenever he is asked. He was released on a bond of `25,000 along with surety of two persons,” DySP Vijayakumaran said.

There is a third accused in the case, Vapputty, a native of Kottakkal. The police will interrogate him soon.

The police had seized all the mobile SIM cards of Rauf in connection with the case and checked the call details.

This helped them unearth his illegal connections which also included IPS officer S Sreejith, who is under suspension now.
