PCB award for MIMS Hospital

The Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) has won the first prize among 500-bedded private hospitals in the state, for taking the best pollution control measures and initiating various social service activities, instituted by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) . MIMS Managing Director Dr Abdulla Cherayakkat, DGM (Engineering and Projects) K N Surendra Das and General Manager (HR) Suhas Pola received the award from Minister for Cooperation C N Balakrishnan at a function held at Kanakakunnu Palace, Thiruvananthapuram, on Wednesday. The award consists of `1 lakh and a certificate.

MIMS has bagged awards for pollution control activities in 2001 and from 2007 to 2011 consecutively, said a press release issued by the hospital. MIMS has set up a sewage treatment plant and a biogas plant as part of the pollution control measures at the hospital. The hospital has also planted flowering plants around the treatment plant, thus converting it into a beautiful garden. The hospital has also introduced a unique method for the disposal of garbage and the waste management team collects biological contents and non-biological contents in different containers, added the release.

The MIMS could also reduce the ‘bio-oxygen demand’, which was brought down to a level less than prescibed by the PCB. With the introduction of the Electronic Medical Record System, the usage of paper was reduced by 80 percent. Use of CFL lamps and solar energy to reduce energy consumption, activities to protect environment, rain harvesting system, quality measures taken for the wellbeing of patients, staff of the hospital and the public were considered for the award, apart from the charitable activities of the hospital. Introducing film-free imaging is another initiative from the MIMS where xray, and other scanning images will be provided in a CD instead of films.
