Private medical colleges break pact with government

The Kerala Private Medical College Management Association (KPMCMA) on Friday decided to withdraw from the agreement it had entered into with the state government for admission to merit and management quota seats in colleges run by it.

The decision came a day after the Admission Supervisory Committee for Professional Colleges cancelled the entrance exam for admission to management seats in the member colleges of the KPMCMA after it detected massive irregularities in its conduct.

With the KPMCMA withdrawing from the agreement, the prospects have turned grim for 450 students from the National Eligibility Cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) merit list, who were entitled to study in eight private medical colleges run by the association with nominal fees. Also uncertain is the fate of 315 management quota seats. “We’ve withdrawn from the agreement as one of the clauses in the agreement clearly says if the entrance exam conducted by the association is annulled, the agreement is void,’’ said V Anil Kumar, secretary, KPMCMA.
