The 23rd division of Maradu municipality is leading the way in controlling diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. Taking a positive step in the direction, Abdul Majeed, the councillor of the division and the health standing committee chairman of the municipality, has decided to distribute mosquito swatters to all residents in the division. According to him, the zappers will be distributed to as many as 272 residents.
“Earlier, we provided swatters and nets to only families below the poverty line. We distributed the contraption, along with a net, to about 80 residents. Later, considering the needs of APL families, we have incorporated them also into the scheme. Distribution to the remaining residents will be completed soon,” he said.
Majeed hopes that the initiative will motivate other councillors to implement similar projects in their divisions.
“We are implementing the scheme with a sense of moral obligation. A total of Rs 40,000 will be distributed as honorarium during the implementation of the project. People are suffering due to the bad effects of fever spread by mosquitoes. This is the right time to introduce the scheme and it would be great if others follow suit as well,” he opined.
