Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Monday said that the government was trying to make the best use of information technology in providing various services to the public.

Speaking after inaugurating the statewide expansion of the e-payment facility of Motor Vehicles Department here, Chandy said that the state’s achievements in the IT sector were less when compared to the high literacy level and achievements in the education sector. The Chief Minister also asked the Transport, Police and Public Works Departments to undertake joint efforts to check the high accident rate in the state. Payment for a range of services, including licence granting, vehicle registration, transfer of ownership, fitness certificate and various renewals could now be made online.

Transport Minister Aryadan Mohammed said that online services would help ensure transparency and efficiency in delivering services. “Effective use of IT will help the department to deploy more officials for field duty and thereby reduce the high accident rate,” he said.

“A total of 4,284 people died in road accidents last year. The total number of accidents reported were 36,000 and 41,000 were injured,” he said. The minister also said that an ordinance would be promulgated to allow payment of tax and insurance via online.

K Muraleedharan MLA, Mayor K Chandrika, District Panchayat vice-president Roufus Daniel, IT principal secretary P H Kurian, Transport Commissioner Rishi Raj Singh and Joint Transport Commissioner Alex Paul attended the function.
