On the run for nearly a month, Dr Gopinath, who has been accused of allegedly roughing up two forest officers on duty during a vehicle check-up near Athirappilly waterfalls, along with film star Kalabhavan Mani, surrendered before the officials at the Athirappilly police station on Tuesday.

A doctor with a primary health centre in Rajakkad, Idukki, Gopinath’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the High Court on May 20, leaving him with no other option but to give himself up.

Dr Gopinath surrendered before the police on Tuesday morning, a couple of weeks after his friend and first accused Kalabhavan Mani, also booked in the case, appeared before the police responding to summons.

After the routine procedures at the station, the police took him to Chalakkudy Judicial First Class Magistrate court where he was released on bail on a bond of `50,000 and a personnel surety.

It was on May 15 that Kalabhavan Mani and Dr Gopinath allegedly assaulted a forest range officer. They were also accused of beating up another forest officer on duty when they tried to stop his vehicle during a routine vehicle checkup at Kannankuzhi near Athirappilly waterfalls in Thrissur.
