Freedom fighter and social activist K P Pauly, 89, died at his residence in Irinjalakuda on Saturday after a brief illness.

He is survived by wife Selin and two children. The funeral will be held at St Thomas Cathedral cemetery at Irinjalakuda, here, on Sunday.

Pauly had actively participated in Quit India Movement when he was a student at Irinjalakkuda Government Boys High School following which he was expelled from school. He was also the founder member of Youth Congress, and has held various positions in DCC, KPCC and AICC and in Irinjalakkuda municipality. He was also instrumental in forming trade unions among the labours in cashew nut sector and headload workers in the district.

Pauly also had started ‘Sound’, a film magazine along with Ramu Kariat, the noted film director.

He was also in the forefront to form ‘Samastha Pulaya Mahasabha’, when he was in Congress.

During Emergency, Pauly had served jail term in Viyyur and Poojapura central prisons in the state.
