As part of improving the quality of education in the state, the Education Department has taken steps to strengthen the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan’s (RMSA) activities. There were 35 schools which got permission to be upgraded as high schools, and Class VIII will be started in 34 schools in this academic year.
The functioning of the Vanmukam School in Kozhikode district would begin after getting the High Court directive in this regard. The construction activities in the schools are being done by the school development committees, as per the guidelines of the RMSA. At present, the higher secondary schools are functioning under the local bodies. A statement from the Education Minister’s office said that at present the School Development Committees in several schools were not in a position to undertake construction activities. Sufficient fund had already been deposited in the school accounts. The Union and State Governments had already given permission to undertake the works by the local bodies. In this academic year, Rs 59.97 crore had been allotted and Rs 15 crore was received by the local bodies. The balance amount will be spend in this academic year itself. The project is being implemented with 75 per cent fund from the Union Government and the rest from the State Government. With this financial assistance, 60 upper primary schools were upgraded to High Schools in 2010.
The appointment of teachers to the schools, upgraded as high schools, are pending before the Finance Department.
