Health and Devaswom Minister V S Sivakumar has said that Mini Regional Cancer Centres (RCC) will be set up in the Government Medical College Hospitals in the state. Sivakumar said the comprehensive project would have facilities to provide treatment for oral, breast and cervical cancers, besides screening, continuous medical examination and treatment. The Minister was addressing a news conference convened to brief the achievements of his ministry on the second anniversary of the UDF Government.
As part of the project, specialities such as medical oncology, and surgical oncology would be opened in a phased manner at the Medical College Hospitals of Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kozhikode. Now, these facilities are available only in RCC, Thiruvananthapuram and the Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC).
Those doctors who successfully complete the specialist course in the RCC would be appointed in the Mini RCCs. The Minister said that the patients getting treatment at the RCC, MCC and Mini RCCs would be given follow up treatment facility.
He said the infrastructure facility for cadaver transplantation would be expanded. As part of this, organ retrieval centres would be opened in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kozhikode Medical College Hospitals and in the Organ Transplantation Institute in Thiruvananthapuram MCH, under the Mrithasanjeevani scheme, With the opening of the institute, the facility for transplanting heart, liver, lungs and other organs would be available in the government sector.
As of now, there are facilities only for transplanting kidneys and eyes, under the government sector.
Multi-disciplinary ICUs, multi-disciplinary labs would also be opened for patients seeking ventilator facility.
A new block worth Rs 80 crore will be opened at the SAT Hospital. The e-health programme linking all health institutions through computers will be implemented at a cost of Rs 96 crore for the first time in the country.
