The new academic year will begin on a green initiative, promoting recycling and protecting the environment. Students can now get a notebook in exchange for plastic bottles. Give four bottles and get one notebook.

The Yuvadhara Kottooli Club, known for its selfless contributions and social work in the city, has initiated a plan to observe the World Environment Day with a difference. The club will distribute notebooks in exchange for plastic bottles on June 2 at Kottooli.

The club came up with this green initiative to reduce the number of plastic bottles strewn or dumped in various parts of the city. To raise funds, to purchase notebooks, members of the club put together a part of their club fund and pooled in money from their own pockets to purchase 2,000 notebooks. One notebook and a sapling will be given in exchange for four plastic bottles.

“Each member of the club decided to sponsor books for 10 children. We intend to collect maximum number of plastic bottles from within Kottooli area as well as various parts of the city. With schools all set to open on June 3, children too will be excited to get notebooks in exchange for a few plastic bottles,” said K V Pramod, secretary of Yuvadhara Club.

The Yuvadhara Club organises unique events every year on World Environment Day. Last year they had cleared plastic bottles from the Canoli Canal, while in 2011, during the Football world cup, they organised ‘One tree for One goal each’. This year their slogan is ‘No Plastic - Yes Plant’, said Vijesh K, president of the club.

“We have already started giving publicity within Kottooli about this unique activity. Every year the club does everything in its capacity to contribute to the growth and sustenance of a clean and healthy environment in the city.

” Prominent environmentalists are slated to take part in the event along with local leaders and public figures. Mayor A K Premajam who is invited to the event said, “Providing books to children in exchange for plastic bottles will be an encouragement to school kids to keep their surroundings clean.”
