A total of 34 people have died in rain-related incidents and loss of property and crops to the tune of Rs 29 crore has been reported from various parts of the state since the beginning of the monsoon season, according to official estimates.
On Thursday alone, 11 people died in separate incidents across the state.A 40-year-old farm labourer Beena from Udumbanchola in Idukki died after the branch of a tree fell over her in heavy rain, district administration officials said. A total of 395 houses were damaged and seven houses completely destroyed in the state on Thursday.
The loss of property was estimated at `70 lakh. Crop loss to the tune of `4.2 crore over an area of 379 hectares across the state was reported on Thursday.
In Thiruvananthapuram district alone property and crop loss of Rs five crore was reported. The district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Thursday and Friday.
In Alappuzha district, inundation of low lying villages in Kuttanad area continues. Adding to the woes, the sea has turned rough in many parts of the district. In Purakkad beach, the coastline was eroded by as much as 50 metres, Alappuzha District Collector N Padmakumar said.
