THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vakkom B Purushothaman, former Governor of Mizoram, who was transferred to the neighbouring Nagaland, resigned from the post in protest against the decision to shift him without consultation. Vakkom faxed his resignation to President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday morning. He had reached his Kumarapuram residence in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday night. Dr Kaml a Beniwal was sworn in as the 12th Governor of Mizoram on Thursday, hours after Vakkom Purushothaman left the state. Vakkom told mediapersons here that Governors were shabbily treated after the NDA Government came to power. “Governors are constitutional authorities. It is grossly improper to transfer them just like any other government official. That is not fair,” he said. Vakkom, who said that the Governor’s position has been “insulted’’, however, did not raise any political or procedural issue in his resignation letter. The veteran leader, a twotime MP, had dabbled in Congress politics for long and held key ministerial posts in UDF governments. He had also served as a Speaker in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Vakkom had served as Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar islands earlier. Vakkom said he will return to Kerala state politics ‘as a Congress worker’, but said that he would not seek any electoral positions.
