TRIPUNITHURA: Though the RLV College has an upper hand in innovations, there are some apprehensions regarding the staff shortage and fund crunch. The teacher-student ratio is a major concern as there is a dearth of teachers. Right from 1989, the recruitment of teachers have been paralysed. In the college which has more than hundred teachers, less than 25 are permanent staff and rest are on contract”, said Madhavan Namboodiri, a senior lecturer with the Music Department. The guest lecturers are appointed for a short period. The college has sought government intervention on the issue. Meanwhile, the Fine Arts Department cries for more funds for improving the existing facilities.
They are also concerned about the plight of the economically backward students who comprise a major chunk. “More students are working part-time to meet the expenses which results in a spurt of absentees. Therefore, we have asked parents to let them work during Saturdays and Sundays,” Abraham said.
