KOZHIKODE: A group of Mechanical Engineering students from Ilahiya Engineering College has claimed to have developed a sand separator that can reduce the amount of clay with less quantity of water.  The new equipment named 'Sand Guru' would be introduced in the market by Concept Industries, Perumbavoor, said the students at a press conference here on Wednesday. The equipment was developed by Mathews Sebastian, K M Mahin and Aboobacker Abin.

"In the ordinary classifiers, sand comes out in the same grain size, whereas in the new machine, sand comes out in two varieties, one used for plastering and the other for concreting,” the students said.

The new sand separator is designed in such a way so as to reduce manpower to separate   sand grains of various sizes, after washing. They said the traditional classifiers released sand in the same grain size. Mahin said at the press conference that the idea to develop the machine came up after the realisation that rock sand would be used in large quantities due to the non-availability of river sand. He said the sand coming out of the separator would be stronger and eco-friendly. The machine was developed after a series of studies for almost a year.

The machine is expected to reduce costs in the construction industry.

The students were guided by E M Mahin Aboobacker and Robin Chacko.

Sand Guru India managing director O M Joy also attended the press meet.
