Two bodies were found exposed in the public graveyard at Choornikkara near here, following the heavy rain on Thursday.

The bodies, which came out as rainwater washed away the soil on the surface, were buried three days ago.

Usually, bodies lying unclaimed in the mortuary of the District Hospital beyond the allowed time limit are buried in the Choornikkara graveyard.

The graveyard is owned by the Aluva Municipality. There were complaints about the way in which the municipality has been burying dead bodies in the graveyard.

Interestingly, the Municipality failed to bury the bodies properly at a time when a complaint in this regard was existing.

Residents of the area, who saw the hospital employees burying the bodies without digging the graves to the required depth and covering them properly, had gathered there and stopped the employees from leaving the place. Later, the matter was settled with the mediation of the police. The police had to arrange for two loads of laterite soil to cover the bodies, which were left on the ground.

The rains that lashed the area on Wednesday and Thursday brought out the bodies, which had started to decay. Panchayat members, including C P Noushad and Samira Jabbar, said that the bodies were not buried properly even after the police interfered.

According to the municipal authorities, the graveyard is having a special type of soil, which has been solidified.

“The soil is in a half-rock state, which cannot be poked or thrust,” they said, and added that machines like the JCB should be used to excavate the rocky surface and to fill the land with soil, which would require substantial fund allocation.

The panchayat members refuted the argument, and said that `40 lakh had already been allocated from the MLA fund, and the present state of the graveyard was purely the outcome of official apathy.
