Heavy rainfall over the past five days has claimed seven lives in the state, taking to 23 the overall death toll in summer shower-related incidents since the beginning of April, disaster management officials said.

Out of the 23 deaths reported since April 1, 19 fatalities occurred due to lightning. Crops spread over 5,700 hectares were destroyed causing a loss of `82.85 crore. The losses due to damaged houses, public property and cattle/ poultry deaths were estimated at around `11 crore, the officials said.

The depression which lay centred around north Kerala early on Friday brought heavy rainfall in the region, causing two deaths besides destroying around 370 houses.

Very heavy rainfall was reported from two places in Kannur -Thalassery and Mattannur - which recorded rainfall of over 20 cm each.

Parts of Malappuram and Kozhikode received rainfall ranging from 17 to 14 cm. Some areas of Palakkad received up to 11 cm of rain.

However, the depression has now moved over to south Karnataka and the heavy rainfall witnessed over the past few days in the state will be on the wane, the Met Department said.

Though rain or thundershowers have been predicted in some parts of Kerala on Saturday, no specific warnings have been issued for Sunday and Monday.
