KANNUR: Blaming the consolidation of minority votes for the poor show of the Left parties in the Lok Sabha election, CPM politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Monday that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy should thank Narendra Modi for uniting the minority votes in favour of the UDF.
Inaugurating the public function organised to commemorate former Chief Minister E K Nayanar on his 10th death anniversary at Payyambalam, near here, Kodiyeri said that the minority votes were consolidated for fear of the Narendra Modi wave.
Minority communities that came up to 49 per cent of the population in Kerala voted for the UDF because they feared Modi would come to power. Oommen Chandy should thank Modi for the pro-UDF stand taken by the minorities, he added.
The credit for the good show of the UDF in Kerala should go to the Kerala Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League, Kodiyeri said. The Congress had nothing to boast of in the victory. The ascent of Narendra Modi to power was also the victory of calculated moves by the RSS.
If the RSS was playing in the background during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s regime, it would take the driving seat in the Modi government, Kodiyeri predicted.
“This makes the situation more dangerous for the common people and minorities. The CPM will take the responsibility of strengthening the Left and secular forces to combat the threat posed by the communal forces led by Narendra Modi,” he said. Later, the CPM politburo member rubbished media reports on M A Baby seeking consent of the central leadership to resign as MLA in the wake of his humiliating defeat in Kollam, as ‘speculative.’
Responding to a question on Pinarayi Vijayan’s controversial ‘stinker’ remark on N K Premachandran, Kodiyeri said that no particular statement could be cited as the reason for the setback in Kollam.
CPM district secretary P Jayarajan, P K Sreemathi, M V Jayarajan, E P Jayarajan, Sarada Teacher, wife of E K Nayanar, K K Sahilaja, A N Shamseer and K K Ragesh attended the function.
The leaders and family members of E K Nayanar offered floral tributes at the tomb of the former chief minister at Payyambalam.
