THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has reached an agreement with management representatives of self-financing engineering colleges in the state on admission and fee structure for the upcoming academic year.

According to the agreement with Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Management Association, 50 per cent of seats in self-financing colleges will be merit seats and will have two fee structures. While the annual fee for half of these seats will be Rs 50,000 (for low income groups), the annual fee for the remaining seats will be Rs 75,000.

Last year, the fees for merit seats were Rs 40,000 (for low income groups) and Rs 65,000 for the remaining seats respectively. Thirty-five percent of the total seats in self-financing colleges will be management quota seats. The annual fees in this category will be Rs 85,000. This includes tuition fees of Rs 75,000 and Rs 10,000 as interest towards security deposit.

The fees in the remaining 15 per cent NRI seats will be Rs 1.5 lakh. Last year, students had to pay an additional Rs 1.5 lakh as security deposit, which has been waived this year.

The government had earlier reached an agreement with self-financing engineering colleges managed by the Inter-Church Council. As per the agreement, the annual fees in both merit and management quota seats was fixed at Rs 75,000 (tuition fees) and Rs 1 lakh as refundable security deposit. Even though the management representatives insisted on relaxation in the minimum marks required for admission to B Tech course, the government did not agree to their demand.
