KOTTAYAM:  ‘Brick by Brick’, a book on educationalist and social activist Mary Roy, and the efforts she put in to build Pallikkoodam school was released at a function on the school campus here on Friday. Mary Roy is also the mother of author-cum-social activist Arundhati Roy.

Penned by George S Skaria, an alumnus of Pallikkoodam school, the book was released by handing over the first two copies to former Supreme Court Judge K T Thomas and Mary Roy.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Thomas said  as the title hints, the book deals with building of a school, stage by stage by Mary Roy. “The book contains a brief picture of what Mary Roy is and the fact that the author has first-hand knowledge about her underscores his competence and authority to speak about Mrs Roy,” he said.  He also spoke about the troubles faced by Mary Roy in setting up the school. “Though the daughter of a top ranking entomologist in India, Mary Roy had to struggle hard. The metamorphosis was slow, but steady,” he said.

According to Justice Thomas, the observation in the book that Mary Roy is not just an educationalist, but also an environmentalist and a social activist, encapsulates what she is.

Skaria said his book was a tribute to a great institution and a teacher.

The book, he said, has been made in four pillars, which are based on the 47-year- old history of the school, life and times of Mary Roy, views of the stakeholders and innovation in the methodology of education adopted by Mary Roy.
