THRISSUR: Kerala Congress (Jacob) chairman Johny Nellore on Friday warned the state government that it should seriously think on whether it would be able to continue giving subsidised rice to BPL people at the present rate of `1 to `3 a kg at a time when the state is reeling under severe financial crisis.
Speaking to press persons here, he said the government should ensure supply of the rice at `3 as the Food Safety Act has already been implemented in the state. At the same time, prices lesser than that would make the people lazy.
He said that the government should defer implementation of increased fair price of the landed property. The 50-per cent-increase on stamp duty on a transaction would be unfair as the present estimation is based on the previous LDF government’s findings, which was deemed unscientific and riddled with complexities, he said.
As per reports, the fair values fixed at many places have been four times higher than the actual estimation. It is in this context, the government should desist from implementing the enhanced fair values.
It will only lead to further stagnation in the sector, he said, adding that it was time KPCC president and finance minister had urgently intervened in the issue.
Similarly, the government’s decision to continue liquor sales through Bevco outlets even after closing down the bars is similar to that of mocking the general public, he said.
