'Reminiscence' to Honour E P Sreekumar

A two-day programme will be held to honour the general manager of Tripunithura People’s Urban Coop Bank who will retire from service this week

The authorities of Tripunithura People’s Urban Co-operative  Bank have decided to conduct two-day programme titled ‘Reminiscence 2014’ to honour E P Sreekumar, the general manager of the bank, who will retire from service this weekend.

E P Sreekumar is also a noted writer. Bank chairman C N Sundharan. at a press meet held here on Wednesday. said a ‘Sahithya sadas’ will be conducted at Tripunithura Municipal Auditorium at Layam Ground at 4.30 pm on Saturday.  Malayalam literary critic M K Sanu will inaugurate the sadas. Writers Asha Menon, C R Omanakuttan, K B Selvamani, A U Vargese and Salan will also speak at the function. Following this, the drama ‘Adukkalayilninu Aragathekku’ will be staged by Tripthi Arts, Palakkad.

On Sunday, musical fusion by Brahma Music Band will be held at 2 pm. A meet to felicitate Sreekumar will be held on the same day and the function will be inaugurated by Excise Minister K Babu. Former Education Minister M A Baby will deliver the keynote address and souvenir will be released by S Sharma MLA.

C N Sundharan added that the director board has organised the programmes to honour Sreekumar for his contributions in the development of bank.

“E P Sreekumar took over the post of general manager of the bank in 1979 when the bank was going through a crisis situation without even having its own building. With his 35-year long service as a general manager, he has lifted it to the current status of special grade urban bank from a fourth grade establishment. He had upgraded the bank by introducing new technologies including core banking, ATMs, internet banking and SMS banking,” the chairman said.

Sundharan further observed that E P Sreekumar used his reputation as a celebrated writer for the welfare of the bank. “Sreekumar reached out to people through his literary works. He adopted simple but different writing style to narrate the true life of the people. His celebrated status also helped him to acquire favours for the bank from government and even RBI,”he added.

Sreekumar’s famous literary works include Kaneer Pashu (a collection of short stories), Maramudra (novel) and  Mamsaporu (novel). He is also the winner of Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, S K Pottekkat Memorial Award and SBT Malayalam Sahitya Award.  Vice-chairman P P Appu, assistant general manager K Jayaprasad, director board members Babu M J, Haridasan Pillai, K T Saigal, T K Basuradevi and K K Valsalan were present at the press meet.
