Malayalees Top the Art of Trolling on Twitter

KOCHI:  Malayalees are having a field day in Twitter these days, trolling everyone from Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to even themselves, making avid followers of the chirpy blue bird who don’t read a word in Malayalam feeling surprised these days.

Last Sunday, many in India, especially those from the North, wondered what makes the Chief Minister of this tiny state trending in Twitter India since early morning itself. After someone tweeted the eponymous movie dialogue ‘Mukhyamanthri Raajivekuka’ (in Malayalam, meaning ‘the CM must resign’) to troll Oommen Chandy over the corruption allegations surrounding his cabinet, the micro-blogging website surged with tweets in Malayalam. By 5.50 am, it became the most trending hashtag in Twitter nationwide.

The trend remained so until about 11.30 am and then gradually climbed down from the top slot to become the sixth most trending topic in India by 12.30 pm.

By then, as reported by hashtrack tracking website Keyhole.co, ‘Mukhyamanthri Raajivekuka’ (in Malayalam) made an impact on about 5127 tweeples.

The Malayalee twitter community has been making its presence felt strongly in Twitter, often on speaking out on topical issues with a Keralite’s trademark sense of humour.

On Wednesday, mainstream political parties were trolled incessantly for calling a hartal in the state, making the hashtag ‘Say no to hartal’ (in Malayalam) trend rank 1 nationwide.

Malayalees even trolled themselves last week, breaking out another hashtag- namely, ‘Malayalees’ (in Malayalam)- to trend rank 1, quipping on which journalist Anna MM Vetticad tweeted: “Why are #Malayalis trending on Twitter? Pray tell, what have we done now?” Perhaps, when it comes to trolling, there seems to be no stopping of Malayalees.
