KOCHI: The Kerala CBSE School Managements Association has strongly criticised the government’s decision to abolish the cut-off mark system for qualifying for entrance examination.  Association president T P M Ibrahim Khan said that the move would diminish the standard of higher education.

“Conducting entrance exams for namesake and not following the norms of valuation will only break the foundation of higher education. Candidates who come out of colleges after such substandard education will find it difficult to find jobs,” he said.’

He said that the present system would invite undesirable consequences, and adversely affect students in the long run.

He demanded that exams be conducted in a transparent manner, and students be selected through proper valuation process to avoid denial of jobs to them. Meanwhile, the managements of unaided professional educational institutions welcomed the decision and called it a wise move.

Federation of Associations of Managements of Unaided Professional Educational Institutions in India president G P C Nayar said that the allegation that the relaxation would lead to deterioration of the standard of education was baseless.

“The quality of education and that of the students admitted in colleges depend on the kind of basic education they receive. By relaxing the valuation process to pass students through class twelfth, schools are promoting such sub-standard quality of education.

Consequently, colleges that admit such students end up being sub-standard” he said, adding that the entrance exam is not a criteria for measuring knowledge, but a simple tool to rank students.  “Failing candidates in the entrance exam is not fair,” he said.
