THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has issued orders making affiliation to Kerala Technological University (KTU) mandatory for all undergraduate and post-graduate courses in Engineering from 2015-16 academic year onwards.
According to the Ordinance for establishing the Kerala Technological University issued by the government, the University can affiliate any of the engineering colleges or institutions imparting education in Technology, owned by the government or government-controlled societies, aided or privately aided self-financing educational agencies, which, before the date of announcing of the ordinance, remain affiliated to different universities.
‘’The Higher Education Department has issued orders to affiliate all existing colleges offering Engineering undergraduate and post-graduate courses in Engineering with KTU and to affiliate new colleges which will be approved by the AICTE for 2015-16,’’ M Abdul Rahman, Pro Vice-Chancellor of KTU, told ‘Express’. Kerala Technological University has been formed to unify the technical education system in the state and to cater to the needs of the technical community. All technical institutions in the state will come under the umbrella of the university. The structure of the university shall be both teaching and affiliating.
There are 161 engineering colleges in the state which cater to 63,200 BTech seats and 8,200 PG seats.
‘’Unlike the traditional universities, KTU will be on an e-platform with maximum possible use of e-governance and hence the requirement of administrative staff for managing the affiliation, conduct of examination, etc. will be minimal,’’ Abdul Rahman said.
