KOCHI:Though the second edition of the Kochi Muziris Biennale (KMB) is set to end in less than 10 days, its spirit will continue to manifest in places outside the city if an upcoming event in an educational institute downstate is any indication.

The SNDP Upper Primary School in Kollam is conducting a ‘Pattathanam Students Biennale’ on April 15.

As many as 125 of its students visited the Kochi extravaganza, gathering ideas about ways to organise their own show during the fortnight it ends on March 29.

The 12-day exhibition themed around atrocities against children and waste management and curated by Thiruvananthapuram-based artist Parvathi S Nair.

It will be held in the school during the summer vacation and is associated with the fine arts colleges in Thiruvananthapuram and Mavelikkara, apart from government and private schools in the area. The multiple award-winning government school hit upon the idea at a recent parent-teacher association (PTA) meeting held to decide on how to celebration the institution’s 70th anniversary.

“We want to give visitors an experience that will touch all five senses,” said R Radhakrishnan, the school headmaster.

M A Baby MLA  had unveiled the students’ biennale logo at the school in a ceremony attended by KMB’14 research coordination Bonny Thomas, in early March.

“It must be a first-time that a school is undertaking a biennale. It is rewarding to see kids taking KMB’14 as an inspiration and trying to adapt it,” said director of programmes Riyas Komu.

The school, which boasts of actor Mukesh and politician Babu Divakaran among its old students, is socially and culturally very active.

The students have tried their hand in film making and publishing, and are also involved with the local palliative care unit.
