KOCHI: Actor and filmmaker Sidharth Bharathan, son of the late director Bharathan and actor KPAC Lalitha, suffered serious injuries after the car he was driving crashed into a wall between Champakara bridge and Thaikkudam bridge on Saturday early morning.

Sidharth, who got trapped in the car after the accident, was rescued and shifted to hospital by the local residents.   According to sources at Medical Trust Hospital, Sidharth is put on ventilator and his condition is critical.

“It is not safe to perform surgery now as there is a fracture on Sidharth’s skull. A decision on the surgery will be taken tomorrow, after scanning the injured part,” said a hospital spokesperson.

Traffic East ACP Sajan Koikkal said, “the hospital authorities have informed that Sidharth is under observation, and that his condition is improving. The incident occurred between 1:30 am and 2:00 am. The car lost control and hit the wall on the right side of the road, causing serious injuries to Sidharth who was driving the vehicle. It will be investigated whether the accident was caused by mistake from the part of the driver or due to technical error. It is learnt that Sidharath was found in unconscious state in the car after the accident,” he  said.

A local resident who had reached the spot soon after the incident said the filmmaker’s life was saved by the car’s airbag. “It seems that the car hit the wall at a very high speed. He was taken out after cutting the door of the car,” he said.
