KOCHI: Counterfeit currencies having face value of Rs 1 lakh was recovered from a person on Monday, while he was trying to transfer Rs 10 lakh to his Mumbai-based son through a bank in Kochi.
The police have launched a search for two Malappuram natives who allegedly cheated the person by giving counterfeit notes against purchase of his luxury car a few days ago.
According to the police, 100 fake notes of 1,000 denomination were detected in the cash deposited by the Marine Drive-resident on Monday morning for transferring the same to his son’s account. Meanwhile, the bank officials said they did not suspect the man, who has been maintaining an active account for several years.
The police collected the details after being informed by the bank officials. “The man in his statement said he had sold the car through a middleman. The middleman introduced the Malappuram natives to him, who agreed to buy the car for Rs 20 lakh. Though the seller had asked the buyers to transfer the money through bank account, they chose to pay by cash. It is from the bank officials that he realised he was carrying counterfeit notes,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police T Suresh.
