Irregularities Found in Sale of Construction Material

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The Legal Metrology department has unearthed major irregularities in the sale of building construction material in the state. Action has been initiated against 91 establishments for various irregularities during state-wide raids.  

The special raids were conducted on Saturday to find illegal practices in the sale of construction materials, including cement, tiles and sanitary fittings. Cement packets of certain brands, including Sankar, Indyana, ACC, Dalmia, Chettinad and Ultratech were found to be underweight, with a weight loss of up to 3 kg. Also, the 25 kg packet of adhesive used for Discovery brand tiles were found to be underweight with a weight loss of up to 500 g.

Cases were registered for taking higher price for cement, tiles and sanitary fittings. Irregularities were found against 91 establishments during the raids. The raids were carried out to unearth irregularities, including under-weight sale of construction materials, taking extra price, failure to record statutory declarations on packets and failure to display certificates related to weighing equipment.  

The raids were led by Legal Metrology southern region Deputy Controller C V Babu based on the directives of Legal Metrology Department state controller Mohammed Iqbal.

Assistant controllers, inspectors and other officials in all districts took part in the raid.
