KOZHIKODE: Negligence on part of the electrification wing of the Railways on Friday took one life while another was left with injuries. Fifty-eight year-old P Krishnan from Koyilandy died at Kozhikode Government Medical College by afternoon while 30-year-old T K Vineesh, who is also from Koyilandy, is undergoing treatment.

The accident occurred here near West Hill Railway station by 10.30 am while one of the counter weight blocks of Overhead Equipment (OHE) fell down and hit Krishnan.  The senior technician was assisting Vineesh, who was holding monthly maintenance works on the cross over cable connecting the electric line. The lines snapped off and the counter blocks fell down suddenly.

Vineesh, who was oiling the OHE, fell down from the electric post along with the counter weight. Though the injured were taken to hospital by co-workers, Krishnan succumbed to injuries by afternoon. The Railways has declared an investigation to the flaw.

“The investigation is on to find the cause of the accident. Any component failure might have led to the accident,” said a senior officer of the Electrification wing of Railways.  Divisional Railway manager Naresh Lawani visited the victims at the hospital.

The Railways will also announce compensation for the victims. According to an officer concerned, the compensation will be distributed after completing essential proceedings.
