The Kerala astrologer who read Jayalalithaa's stars right

It was Panicker’s prediction in 2001 that Jayalalithaa would become Tamil Nadu Chief Minister that made her a staunch believer in Panicker’s astrological acumen.

KOZHIKODE: For J Jayalalithaa, the iconic leader of Indian politics, it was none other than the famous Malabar-based astrologer Parappanangadi Unnikrishna Panicker who through his astrological insights time and again gave guidance to her to fight all odds and stay clear on her path to success.

It was Panicker’s prediction in 2001 that Jayalalithaa would become Tamil Nadu Chief Minister that made her a staunch believer in Panicker’s astrological acumen. Though Panicker made the prediction, none was ready to believe it because Jayalalithaa couldn’t contest as she was debarred due to criminal cases pending against her. But the AIADMK won the Assembly elections and she was made the Chief Minister as a non-elected member of the Assembly. AIADMK members were so happy with his forecast and with their favourite leader becoming the Chief Minister, they presented Panicker Rs 10 lakh as gift. Since 2001, Panicker remained the most trusted astrologer of Jayalalithaa.

People close to the astrologer said Jayalalithaa maintained a cordial rapport with Panicker since 2001 and it was as per his advice that Jayalalithaa started offering prayers at various temples in the state. Jayalalithaa donated an elephant to Guruvayur temple in Kerala after the 2001 Assembly elections. “She used to consult him regularly,” they added.

Reports say that she used to consult Panicker before taking any major decision. After reaching the age of 60, Jayalalithaa was more into religious activity and took the advice of astrologers to steer clear of all hurdles.
