THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after the 29-day-long Kerala Law Academy Law College strike, a cornered Communist Party of India Marxist (CPM) has come out defending its stance alleging a BJP-UDF understanding in the issue. In what could be viewed as an apparent reference to its minor
partner Communist Party of India (CPI), CPM accused other parties of falling into the BJP's political trap.

In an article that appeared in party mouthpiece Deshabhimani on Friday,  CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan alleged a mutually-planned attempt by the UDF and the BJP to destabilise the Left government in the state.

The students' strike was sabotaged by the two parties, he said. "The expressions of solidarity at the protest venue in Peroorkkada, brought out the soft approach towards BJP-RSS by Congress-Muslim League parties.

AK Antony and League leader Hyderali Shihab Thangal came to bless the BJP. Even for VM Sudheeran, who had refused to join hands with the CPM in fighting against the Modi government following demonetisation, had no reluctance to support the BJP," Kodiyeri pointed out.

The Law Academy strike was transformed into a political strike against the Left government. In fact the Congress fell into the BJP-sponsored agitations. The CPM wanted everyone supporting the LDF to realise this and take a stance accordingly, the CPM secretary pointed out.

In what appears to be a desperate attempt to rule out rift within the Left, Kodiyeri says though the CPM and the CPI are individual parties, both come under the LDF accepting the concept of Marxism, Leninism and class war. He claimed that unity between the two Communist parties have strengthened at the national level also.

He also criticised attempts to defame CM Pinarayi Vijayan in the name of the strike. There were attempts to portray the strike as a land agitation. Refuting allegations against the CPM in the law academy
issue, Kodiyeri further added that the party won't support any attempt to unnecessary crucify anyone to protest the vested interests of BJP and UDF.

As expected the Kodiyeri jibe has invited criticisms from various corners. While  CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran said Kodiyeri's comments were not aimed at the CPI, Congress said there's a hidden
tie-up between the CPM-BJP in the state.
