KOLLAM: A novel initiative in which live broiler chicken  attached with QR code tags guaranteeing safe-to-consume status will be launched on Friday by Minister J Mercykutty Amma.

The QR code tagged to the legs of live chicken will provide information on the type of food fed, medicines given and even the signature of the farmer who reared the chicken when it is scanned using a mobile app. It is developed by Venad Poultry Farmers Producers Limited, with the help of NABARD and Kerala Agriculture University. The launch function will take place at the Venad Signature Chicken, franchise outlet, near Kottiyam at 3 pm.

While briefing about the initiative, K Chandraprasad, chairman of Venad Poultry Farmer Producer Cooperative Ltd, said that through such an initiative the aim is to provide safe chicken which is free from antibiotics, steroids and other hormones.

According to him, the QR tag in the legs of the chicken will bear a unique number of the farmer who reared the chicken, his name and address, details of the feed used and others.
The programme will be attended by G S Jayalal MLA, NABARD chief general manager V R Raveendranath and others.
