Kerala Government takes over 117  vacant NRI seats in self-financing medical colleges

Managements to sue the move of Entrance Commissioner

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 117 NRI seats in the self-financing medical colleges, that fell vacant after the spot admission, have been converted into merit seats and all these seats were filled by Friday evening. Meanwhile, the managements have come forward against converting the NRI seats to merit seats. Stating they would approach the court against this, they alleged the Entrance Commissioner did not have any right to do so. They said the SC had directed to complete the admission procedure on August 31 and the continuation of the process for the next day was illegal.

Separate formula for BPL students

However, Health Minister K K Shylaja said the government would help students if the managements approached the court. She reiterated the government would come up with separate formula for helping the students in the BPL category. Though the spot admission for general and community seats was over by early Friday morning, 117 NRI seats fell vacant and was taken over by the government.

The admissions to the 117 seats was completed by Friday evening. Since the Supreme Court has ruled that medical admissions need to be completed before August 31, the admission made on September was treated as a continuation of the admissions made on the previous day. As the decision of the commissioner was as per V and VI of the provisions in the prospectus, it is said the decision of the entrance commissioner would get legal protection.  Entrance Commissioner M T Reju said 1,714 seats were to be filled in MBBS and BDS through spot admission. In the general category, spot admission was called till 11,551 ranks, upto 12,617 rank in SC, 25,594 rank in ST. In the NRI seats, spot admission was called till 45,709 rank.
