Despite Law Academy truce, LDF a divided house

With several sticking points remaining, the two Left parties are looking forward to the LDF meet to raise the issues against each other

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The contentious issue of the Kerala Law Academy Law College agitation is over for the time being; but the sparks within the ruling LDF are yet to die down.

With several sticking points remaining, the two Left parties are looking forward to the LDF meeting to raise the issues against each other.

The CPM state secretariat had the other day decided to take up the Law Academy issue in the LDF instead of going in for a public spat with the CPI.

On the other hand, even the CPI needs the same platform to set things right. Major concerns regarding the functioning of the state police too will be voiced before the LDF.

“The issue of the police being given a free hand is a major concern for both the CPM and the CPI. The incident during the state school arts festival in Kannur--the tension arising out of the BJP procession carrying the body of a slain party worker-- has shocked us all.

There was no need for the procession to take that route. The entire issue could have been avoided,” said a senior CPI leader.  A relatively insipid approach from the police towards the blast near the venue of CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s meeting at Thalassery, has irked many in the party.

“There were hardly two-three policemen present at the venue when it happened. Can you imagine such a scenario when the LDF is in power? The police are having a free run; And due to some unknown reason the government is not taking this seriously,” said a senior CPM leader. Adding to the LDF woes, the Law Academy land row has become a real conundrum. Both the CPM and the CPI are waiting for the LDF meet to take up the issue and explain their contradictory stance.

Since LDF convener Vaikom Viswan was away, the LDF meet could not be held recently. However a couple of bilateral talks have already been held between the CPM and the CPI. Speaking to Express, Viswan said the date for the next LDF meet has not been finalised yet.
