KOCHI: No need to strain your eyes henceforth while checking the price tag and expiry date of goods. With the Legal Metrology Department deciding to strictly implement the amendments in the Packaged Commodity Rules, the MRP and other relevant details will be printed in an enlarged format on commodities.
After a brief interval, the department will conduct checks across the state to make sure the guidelines are followed.
As per the amendments, the principal display panel showing the manufacturing date, MRP, quantity, name and address of manufacturer/packager/importer and the consumer care contact details should be printed in 40 per cent size on one side of the cover or packet, said Legal Metrology Department deputy controller R Rammohan.
“This amendment was brought out in 2015 so people can easily check the MRP and other details while buying packaged goods. In most of the packaged items sold here, the MRP font size is very small, making it difficult for customers to check the details. Even though the amendment was challenged in court, a two-year time period was given to enforce it. As the allotted time is over, the enforcement will commence soon,” he said.
If the packaged goods are sold without an enlarged principal display panel, the department can take action against manufacturers and sellers.
“We will be giving them a fixed time gap to be aware of the new guidelines. Later, enforcement activities will be conducted. If any manufacturer is found flouting the norms, a case will be registered against the firm and the retailers,” said the officer.
