THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After remaining underground for around three months, the prime accused in Nirmal Krishna chit fund fraud case Nirmalan Krishnan Nair surrendered on Wednesday. He surrendered before the Madurai District Court reportedly on the advice of his lawyers. The court remanded him till November 29 and he was shifted to the district jail.
A source said Nirmalan surrendered before the court around 3 pm evading the attention of a large battalion of police which was deployed in front of the three gates of the court. The source said he reached the court hall alone wearing a ‘purdah.’ However, nine more accused are still at large. According to the investigation team of the Tamil Nadu police, they will submit a custody application on Thursday itself in the court to take him into police custody for further interrogation and evidence collection.
Meanwhile, the Kerala police are also likely to submit a custody application once the interrogation by the Tamil Nadu police is completed. Nirmalan Krishnan Nair had gone absconding since the closing down of the Nirmal Krishna Chit Fund Company Pvt Ltd at Palukal in September. Reports said he was under pressure from certain ‘VIPs’ in the state to surrender. They are apprehensive that the probe may ultimately zero in on them. Hence they told Nair to surrender so that the probe comes to an end.
A week ago, Nair’s counsel had withdrawn the anticipatory bail application from the magistrate court in the capital. The investigators see the move as an attempt to surrender. On Tuesday, the police team had also arrested Nirmalan’s brother-in-law to exert pressure on him to surrender. The arrested is Mahesh and he was taken into custody from Thiruvananthapuram.
