

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Former Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob, who died on Sunday in Pala, was remembered as a model politician and an able administrator and parliamentarian.Governor P Sathasivam on Sunday said that in Jacob’s death, we have lost an eminent statesman whose stature was marked by humility.
“He performed his role as the Governor of Meghalaya for two terms, the Minister of State, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha and parliamentarian with the remarkable efficiency of a silent performer,” he said.In a Facebook post, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Jacob was a person who left his imprint in every field that he was active in.
He was an able administrator and a fine parliamentarian, the Chief Minister said.Jacob had made invaluable contributions to the nation and the Congress which would be remembered for a long time to come, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said in a condolence message.
Jacob came into active politics through the Bhoodan movement. The soft-spoken Jacob, who rose to become the first Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman from the state, was a model politician and a good organiser, he said.
KPCC chief M M Hassan remembered Jacob as a secular leader who will be remembered as the state’s big contribution to national politics. The KPCC has declared two days of mourning as a mark of respect for Jacob. All programmes of the Congress party stands cancelled for two days.
AICC secretary Sreenivasan Krishnan has said M M Jacob took care to uphold the founding principles of Congress including secularism at all times. Even while holding high offices, he was known for his simplicity. His services to the party and the country will be remembered always, he said in a condolence message.
‘M M Jacob was an able administrator’
T’Puram: M M Jacob was a popular and able administrator who won the respect of all irrespective of political affiliation, senior Congress leader A K Antony said on Sunday. He made significant contributions towards bringing the north-eastern states to the mainstream during his tenure as Meghalaya Governor, said Antony, who worked closely with Jacob for many years. As a member of the Bharat Sevak Samaj, he got ample opportunities to interact with senior leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Gulzarilal Nanda, Antony remembered. As Minister of State and, subsequently, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman, Jacob discharged his duties in a laudable manner, Antony added.
