IDUKKI: Overflowing rivers caused flooding at different places in Ernakulam district on Monday. The worst affected places include Aluva, Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha. Water is being released from Boothathankettu dam, resulting in increasing water level in the Periyar river.

Aluva Manappuram has been submerged completely, with water touching the ‘nalambalam’ roof of the Siva Temple. Some parts of the newly constructed bridge at Manappuram also lay submerged due to the heavy flow of water in Periyar. Though shutters of the Malankara dam have been downed to 1.5 m, due to heavy rain, Muvattupuzha river continues to overflow leaving several low-lying areas inundated.
“Due to heavy rain in Idukki region, water level in the Muvattupuzha river is rising.

In several parts of Muvattupuzha, crop-losses have been reported. Some houses were damaged partially,” said an officer with the Ernakulam District Disaster Management Centre. The Periyar river stretch at Kothamangalam too is overflowing, affecting the lives of tribal communities in the Kuttampuzha sector. Several tribal colonies on the other side of the Pooyamkutty river have been cut off from the mainland.
Flooding was reported at Perumbavoor, Kalady and Malayattoor as well.
