THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Paving way for effective market intervention in the coir sector, the state government has accorded approval for the Memorandum and Articles of Association for constituting the Kerala Coir Marketing Company (KCMC) Pvt Ltd.

The proposed company, which will help promote the ‘Kerala Coir’ identity in the international and national markets, is expected to create a space of its own by ‘procuring, purchasing, buying, collecting and importing husks, fibre and finished coir products from India or abroad either directly or through commission agents.’ The finished products and value-added products thus made will then be sold in the domestic or international markets.

It is learned that through this, the traditional coir sector is eyeing to recapture and strengthen its market share.“The main objective of the company will be to encourage coconut plantations or coconut cultivation in the state. It also targets to ensure coconut husks to public and private sectors in the state at reasonable rates,” said an officer with the Coir Development Directorate.

At the same time, in the proposal submitted by the Coir Development Director N Padmakumar to the government last November it has been stated that the KCMC could not only enter into a contract with foreign governments but also with the Government of India or state governments or other stakeholders including cooperative societies for the procurement of husks. The company will be created with a share capital of `10 crore.
