THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police’s decision to register case against the owner of the theatre in Edappal where a 10-year-old girl was molested has invited sharp reaction from former state police chief T P Senkumar. He said the move will backfire as informers will now choose to remain silent fearing police action.

The former police chief pointed out that it was the theatre owner who brought the incident to light. “How many similar cases might have happened in the past? And in those cases, the people involved might have gotten away. But here a video recording proved a clinching piece of evidence,” he said, adding that if the theatre owner had kept mum, no one would have got a wind of the crime.

He also said that there is no justification in the complaint that it was Childline officials who were first informed and not the police. “Childline is also a strong institution dealing with such crimes. And when the police were informed, what did they do? They sat on the complaint for several days,” he said.
