THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cochin Devaswom Board has scripted a new chapter in its history by appointing 54 non-Brahmin priests, including seven from the Scheduled Caste.

Devaswom Recruitment Board chairman M Rajagopalan Nair said that the priests were appointed on the basis of a PSC model exam that consisted an OMR test and interview. “Of the 70 priests who were appointed, 54 were non-brahmins. Among the selected 54 persons, 31 were in the merit list,” said Rajagopalan.

According to him, of the 34 persons selected from the Ezhava community, 27 were in the merit list. In the case of Dheevara community, four were selected, of which two were in the merit list.

Whereas from Hindu Nadar and Viswakarma communities, one each candidate has been selected in the merit list. In the case of OBC candidates, seven were selected.
