NIRF rankings show Kerala universities have better performance

In the overall category, the University of Kerala bettered its ranking by 5 spots from 52 in 2022 to 47 in 2023, and Cusat improved by six notches from 69 in 2022 to 63 in 2023.

KOCHI: Many of the higher educational institutions in the state have bettered their ranking from last year in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF-2023), released on Monday. 

In the overall category, while the University of Kerala, Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) and Calicut University have improved their performances from last year, Mahatma Gandhi University slipped a spot. The University of Kerala bettered its ranking by 5 spots from 52 in 2022 to 47 in 2023, Cusat improved by six notches from 69 in 2022 to 63 in 2023. The National Institute of Technology, Calicut which was not listed in the overall category in 2022 stood at 54th this year.

In the universities category, the University of Kerala which was ranked 40th in 2022 bettered the score to rank 24th in NIRF 2023. Cusat which stood at 41 in 2022 has climbed up to 37th rank while Calicut University which stood at 69 in 2022 fell a rank to 70 in 2023. MGU too went down a rank from 30 in 2022 to 31 in 2023.

In the engineering colleges category, while NIT-Calicut improved its ranking going from 31 in 2022 to 23 in 2023, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IISST) at Thiruvananthapuram fared poorly with its ranking going down from 43 in 2022 to 48 in 2023. The same goes for IIT Palakkad which stood at 68 in 2022 and fell a rank to 69 in 2023.

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram which was in 9th position in 2022 fell a rank to 10th in 2023 ranking. However,  a medical college (Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram) in the government sector in the state made its entry in the ranking in 44th place. 

The management schools too in the state showcased a better ranking with IIM-K coming 3rd in 2023 from the 5th position in 2022 and NIT-Calicut standing at 75 in 2023 from the 84th rank in 2022. But Rajagiri Business School which was in the 74th position in 2022 came down to 83rd rank in 2023.

In the Agriculture and Allied Sectors category that was opened in NIRF 2023, Kerala Agriculture University in Thrissur was ranked 15th while Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (KUFOS) stood at 25th. Another new category called Innovation saw NIT-Calicut bagging the 8th rank in a list of 10.
