KOLLAM: The Kollam rural district crime branch has begun its probe into the murder of Dr Vandana Das at the Kottarakkara taluk hospital. The probe team led by DySP M M Jose visited the hospital, where S Sandeep fatally stabbed the young doctor. The team examined the crime scene and talked to the hospital staff, who were present during the attack.

The probe is being monitored by rural SP M L Sunil Kumar. Meanwhile, the team will seek the custody of Sandeep, who was remanded to the Poojappura central prison. Currently, he is lodged in a high-security cell and his mental and physical condition is said to be stable. “We will move an application for Sandeep’s custody on the first working day of next week.

We have prepared an action plan on how to conduct the probe,” DySP M M Jose told TNIE. Meanwhile, the sleuths will assess Sandeep’s mental condition with the help of doctors. There has been no confirmation from his relatives about any mental illness. “When he was brought to the hospital, Sandeep behaved normally at first. He himself told his address at the OP ticket counter,,” said another police source. The murder took place in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The cops had brought Sandeep to the hospital in Kottarakkara for treatment after they got a distress call from him. While the doctors and paramedics were attending to his injuries, Sandeep suddenly turned violent and started attacking people around him using scissors. As other doctors ran to safety, Vandana was alone in the room. Sandeep allegedly stabbed her several times.
